Jag funderar ibland på vad som händer med en individ då hen företräder en offentlig inrättning och ikläder sig någon typ av uniform eller profilkläder som det ofta kallas i lite mindre militära sammanhang. Lika intressant är vad som händer med den omgivning i form av andra, icke offentliga och/eller uniformerade individer, som är mottagare av den effekt som företeelsen ger upphov till.

Igår avsåg jag behaga mitt tobaksbegär genom att inköpa en dosa snus. Strax bredvid står en annan minst lika vettlös individ, denne av relativ medelålder, och ropar olika kioskrelaterade termer som jag bara kan anta är menade att påkalla uppmärksamhet och prioriterad betjäning. Samtidigt trycker han upprepande på knappen för fler nummerlappar som han efter utmatning omedelbart knycklar ihop och slänger i en papperskorg intill. Vad detta beteende tjänar till har jag ännu inte lyckats begripa.

Samtidigt har någon ur personalen med butiksröd skjorta och namnbricka lyckats bända loss snorungarnas cykelhjälmar från glasskorgen och försöker nu, synnerligen pedagogiskt, förklara att cyklar inte kan medföras in i butiken och att glassar helst ska betalas innan provsmakning. Pedagogen får utstå respons som samtidigt både hånar och nonchalerar henne och inte förrän det är uppenbart för alla att de själva fattat beslutet att maka sig iväg kan jag med glädje se dem försvinna. Helst för alltid. Lättnaden för personalen blir dock kortvarig enär den högljudde mannen som tydligen fått slut på både kioskreferenser och nummerlappar attackerar henne med anklagelser om lång väntetid. I egenskap av butikspersonal verkar hon i sin omgivande miljö vara närmast befriad från status, till skillnad från vad man kanske kunde förmoda.

Jag föreställer mig att det tidigare var så att uniformen bidrog till, och kanske från början syftade till, att avpersonifiera en individ för att öka graden av förtroende och respekt för någon som företrädde en armé, ordningspatrull eller myndighet. Med fler uniformer på mindre myndighetsutövande grupper kunde dessa effekter överföras även när uniformen inte innefattade handeldvapen. Med tiden har det kanske gått lite inflation i uniformeringen och i många fall ter sig avpersonifieringen endast bidra till att övriga medborgare, eller i vissa fall snarare motborgare, tycker sig kunna behandla en uniformerad person helt utan respekt. Som om individen lämnat kvar sin individ i omklädningsskåpet och nu avpersonifierad kan spottas och skrikas på som om hen vore en dator eller en byrå.

Det jämförelsevis ganska harmlösa exemplet ovan har många motsvarigheter där vi tenderar att nedvärdera människor utifrån deras befattning, titel, ämbete, klädsel etc, utan att beakta att samtliga dessa individer fortfarande är människor som ska behandlas med respekt. Det paradoxala i sammanhanget är ju att även den som agerar själviskt och empatilöst är en människa som ska behandlas med respekt. Och häri ligger nog en utmaning eftersom när vi bortser från detta faktum endast kommer att förvärra ett problem och bidra till eskalerande grad av motborgerlighet.
